P. Jay Knight: The Interview + Video

So a few weeks ago, I went on a 6 week adventure across the country. I was given a 15 passenger van packed full of a families belongings, and drove from Georgia to California. Just me, alone, with just two bags of personal stuff; one full of clothes, one with camera gear. During my journey I stayed in Los Angeles for about a week and a half. My friend josh in L.A introduced me to his friend P.Jay. Now, P.jay and I clicked instantly, bonding over our interest in Hip Hop and our similar personal traits.  We did everything from kick a cypher in the garage to chat up girls along the 3rd Street Promenade in Santa Monica. We had a blast, and I definitely view P.Jay as a friend for life.

As for P.Jays music, I am also a fan. P. Jay is a very intelligent young man. He is only 20 years old, and yet, has the wisdom of a much older gentleman. His wordplay and diction is crafted like a fine wine, while keeping a truthful directness. P.Jay draws directly from his life to create his songs. His experiences, emotions, and day to day life create his basis, and his reactions to those events create his story lines.

The great thing about P. Jay is that he takes his rap seriously as an artist; but always keeps in mind that Hip Hop is about having fun. His music reflects his personality, and his serious, although comical views of every day life.

I sent P. Jay some questions to answer shortly after I came back to Atlanta; Hope you enjoy his answers.

Q.1: First off who are you? State your name and affiliation for the fans at home.

A:  I was born Patrick Henry Knight, Jr. aka P.jay aka P. aka James Baxter. I’m a co-creator of the rap collaboration, Dopess Alliance (the D.A.). I was born and raised in L.A.. Mid-City is my home.

Q.2: How long have you been rapping? Do you remember your first verse?

A: Honestly, I wanna say I was probably rappin’ in the womb.  But the first verse I remember writing was in elementary school. Some bully tried to do me dirty on the playground and I went home and wrote a verse about him.

Q.3:  What does rap mean to you? How does it make you feel?

A: Rap means more to me than I could ever possibly express in a couple of sentences. But, rap, is and has always been my release; a form of expression through lyrics. I will never need a therapist as long as I have hip hop.

Q.4: So you were in the studio for five hours the other day; what was your favorite verse out of the new work you’re putting out soon?

A: This is true, the longest session of my life (Lol)… but out of all of my records I feel my first verse on F.S. (Fuck Swag) is gonna have to be the best.  (“Fuck Swag” )

Q.5:  Out of everything you have done since you started rapping, what was your favorite moment?

A: Off top, my favorite moment so far, I would have to say was with Fresh (co-creator of the D.A.), Bebo, and I performed at the Key Club (Hollywood, CA).  That has to be one of my favorite moments of all time. Everyone who really supports us was there– and, we killed it!

Q.6: Where did it all start? What made you start rapping, and what event in your life made it all worth it?

A: Like I said, it all started in elementary school. I didn’t have beats so it was really poetry. Fast forward to high school– L.A. High– and I’m skipping class to write in the hallways, every verse topping the last. It was in high school where I was fortunate to have met three other talented artists and musicians who eventually helped to create the D.A.. That collaboration is everything to me.

Q.7: Who is your favorite rapper in the game right now, and who do you pull inspiration from as an artist?

A: My favorite? See that’s hard because I like and respect a lot of these niggas coming up right now. But, honestly, I’m going to have to say Drake. His song, “Look What You’ve Done”, on his Take Care album painted a story of his life and relationship with his mom that I feel no one else could have done as well… except for me (lol).  As far as inspiration goes, I inspire myself. My emotions run deep and that’s where my music comes from. I’m also inspired by my bro, Fresh. He writes, and raps, but he’s a talented musician/producer who started out making beats.
